Eugene Fencers Club is a registered USA Fencing club founded in 1976. We offer affordable classes, open bouting, and private lessons in an inclusive and supportive environment. Whether you’re a beginner or experienced fencer, our goal is to offer an inclusive space to nurture the love of fencing in Eugene, Oregon.
Coaches



Alfred Lara
Coach, President
Alfred’s fencing pedigree runs long and deep. A former member of the Olympic Team training squad, he was the protegee of legendary fencer and Olympic coach Michael D’Asaro, an Olympian and world renown fencing champion. Currently, Coach Alfred is a top-ranked competitor in the National and International Veteran’s circuit. He trains At the Oregon Fencing Alliance, home to multiple world champions, including Olympic Gold Medalist Mariel Zagunis. He combines his fencing, Business Coaching, and youth mentoring skills to communicate effectively with students for optimal fencing skills development and enjoyment.

John Heberling
Coach, Vice President/Treasurer
Fulfilling a long-time desire, John began fencing at California Fencing Accademy in San Jose, CA. After teaching classes there, he earned Moniteur certification from USFCA in foil (2009) and epee (2012). After moving to Eugene in the summer of 2018, he joined EFC.

Adam Lake
Coach
Coach Adam has been coaching for more than 20 years. Previously head coach of University of Oregon, his students have competed nationally and internationally. Adam coaches the epee program.

Carl Knoch
Coach
Carl began fencing when he was an adult in Virginia, where he immediately loved the sport and began taking lessons in foil at what was at the time the largest fencing school in the country. While in Virginia, he competed nationally for many seasons in both foil and epee and also coached the Mary Baldwin University fighting Squirrels to multiple Virginia Intercollegiate Women’s Fencing Association championships. He finally landed in Eugene in 2011 where he helped organize the Lane Community College Titan Fencing Club. He also began teaching the sport at Amazon Community Center as a part of Eugene Recreation. Carl has been teaching there for 12 years now and has shown hundreds of students the fun that can be had hitting their friends with metal sticks. He joined EFC in the fall of 2024 as foil coach and continues to teach at Amazon as well.

Marty Hutcherson
Coach
Marty started fencing in 1980 at Falcon Studios in Los Angeles under Ralph (“the boss”) Faulkner until the salle closed in 1987. Studying primarily foil and sabre with some individual lessons with Okawa and George Ganchev. Later he took introductory pedagogy lessons from Ted Katzoff at the Westside fencing center in Los Angeles. After a career break, he moved to Eugene and became a member of the Eugene Fencers Club and under the guidance of Alfred, Adam, Carl, and John, he coaches beginners the basics. He is a certified USFA coach.

Nic Walcott
Coach
As soon as Nic held his first foil, he knew he had found the sport for him. Nic took the fencing class at Lane Community College from Maestro Sean Hayes several times, forming a strong foundation in the basics of fencing. Along with a few other students, Nic helped start the Titan Fencing Club and served as their vice president for two years. After taking a several year break, Nic came back to fencing in 2022 with a new passion. Nic specializes in foil and enjoys teaching students about the fundamentals of right of way.
Board of Directors
The affairs of Eugene Fencing Club are governed by a voted in Board of Directors. Positions are held for two years, with elections happening yearly for rotating positions. More information about the Board of Directors and the operation of the Eugene Fencing club can be found in our by laws.
